BILINGUAL ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY The Norma Bilingual English-Spanish Dictionary was first compiled in order to cover the Spanish and English languages spoken and written on both sides of the Atlantic. This new edition has been revised and updated not only to enhance the dictionary’s coverage in specialist and general vocabulary, but also to attend and inform on the practicalities that arise when living in Spanish (or English) speaking countries. In a few words, so that users feel at ease with Spanish (or English) as a second language. The dictionary has been enriched with new scientific, technological, business, and sports terminology, as well as with a number of encyclopedic terms that students need for the correct understanding of required curricular readings. It contains likewise an abundance of Latin American terms in current use and should prove valuable for translators, teachers, technicians, business people, and office workers who frequently come across descriptive literature, letters and other papers written in Spanish. One drawback of most bilingual dictionaries is the tendency to define words at length. We have tried to avoid this pitfall and have endeavored instead to give in each case the nearest English equivalent, which is what the user of a bilingual dictionary is really looking for. On the other hand, the way in which certain words are used by native speakers is not always clear from a definition, thus we include plenty of natural examples which are more useful than an attempt at academic definition. Spanish is also very rich in idiomatic expressions that often defy literal interpretation or grammatical analysis. We have included as many of these as possible —especially those most commonly used—with their equivalents in English. Other features of the Norma Bilingual English-Spanish Dictionary to which we call the reader’s attention are: a) A brief outline of Spanish grammar which we feel will be useful for review and reference purposes. b) Complete model conjugations of Spanish verbs, both regular and irregular.
